People with this fear of flying or aerophobia become very restricted in:
- Where they choose to holiday, which in turn restricts their families and friends
- Should they have friends or family living in other countries, they find they don’t have the same opportunity to visit. Or should they visit they are exhausted, and the meeting is never an enjoyable experience.
- The type of employment they can apply for can be limited. Business trips to other countries are a definite no no. i.e. Air steward/stewardess, International buyer.
This phobia can affect people in many ways. Some find aeroplanes claustrophobic, while others find turbulence a problem, some just the talk of flying makes them weak at the knees, stressed. You’re not alone with this phobia, it has been estimated that 1 in 10 of us has some fear of flying!
Even with the knowledge that flying is one of the safest modes of transport, this makes no difference to them. This phobia of flying is OFTEN in their imagination, maybe a film they have seen, or an experience that a friend has gone through, and their imagination has increased as the though it is replayed time after time.
